I have always been drawn to the music of Norwegian composer, singer and sound artist Maja S. K. Ratkje – from my first years at the music academy, till I played her amazing “gagaku variations” (acc+str4tet) at my final “Soloist Debut” exam.
Therefore I am absolutely thrilled that she and the British artist Kathy Hinde will create a new 30 minute piece for me and the Scottish Red Note Ensemble.
Aeolian draws its inspiration and working title from the “breath” of the accordion and will use the accordionist as a central musical and air-producing source.
The ensemble is connected to the air-stream provided by the accordionist’s «lungs» and other systems. The piece will be set up as an installation of modified, conventional and invented instruments, all acoustic, which will surround the audience.
World Premiere: Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2017 (UK)
Commissioned by: Red Note Ensemble (UK)
