In 2001, as a freshman at the music academy in Copenhagen, I had the opportunity to start an ensemble called the Modern Tango Quintet – a ‘tango nuevo’ quintet (accordion, violin, guitar, piano, double bass) drawn by the intriguing music of Astor Piazzolla and a profound wish to perform it as authentically as possible.
However, after having delved deep into Piazzolla’s world for some years, we developed a thirst for tango related to our own time and space.
With respect for the legacy of Argentinian tango and the music of Astor Piazzolla, we started challenging contemporary composers to engage with the tango genre and we revisited the ‘classics’ by twisting and stretching them with our own personal interpretations.
This process called for a name change. Today, MTQ is a versatile contemporary quintet that strives to expand – and sometimes break – the boundaries of tango. A new music ensemble with a tango backbone.
Our new cd is released in April 2014 – in the meantime you can check out our first album on Spotify or iTunes.
